Moana (Live-Action) — July 10, 2026
The big one for 2026. Catherine Laga'aia stars as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson returning as the demigod Maui. The animated original earned $687M worldwide and became one of Disney's most beloved modern films — especially thanks to "How Far I'll Go" and "You're Welcome."
The live-action version promises to bring the stunning Pacific Island setting to life with real locations and cutting-edge VFX for the ocean sequences. Lin-Manuel Miranda's soundtrack will be reimagined for the new format.
Release date: July 10, 2026
Also Coming from Disney in 2026

Toy Story 5 — June 19, 2026

The Frozen phenomenon continues with a third installment. Elsa and Anna return for another adventure — and if the first two films' combined $2.8 billion box office is any indication, this will be absolutely massive.

Confirmed Remakes in Development
Tangled (Live-Action) — TBD (Expected 2027–2028)
Disney has confirmed a live-action Tangled with cast already attached:
- Teagan Croft as Rapunzel
- Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider
- Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel
Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is directing. No release date yet, but production is underway.
Hercules (Live-Action) — TBD
The Russo Brothers are producing and Guy Ritchie is directing Disney's live-action Hercules. The original's mix of Greek mythology, gospel music, and humor makes this one of the most creatively interesting remakes in the pipeline. Casting announcements are expected soon.
Lilo & Stitch 2 — May 26, 2028
After the massive success of the 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch ($848M worldwide), Disney greenlit a sequel almost immediately. The original creative team returns.
Release date: May 26, 2028
Rumored / In Early Development
These remakes have been reported by various sources but don't have confirmed release dates or full creative teams yet:
- Bambi — A live-action/CGI hybrid has been in development for years. The tone would need to be handled very carefully given the original's most famous scene.
- Robin Hood — A CG-animated reimagining was reported to be in development for Disney+.
- The Sword in the Stone — Reported to be in early development with a live-action approach.
- The Aristocats — Rumored for a live-action/animation hybrid.
- Atlantis: The Lost Empire — Fan-favorite pick for a remake, though Disney hasn't confirmed anything.
- Treasure Planet — Another fan favorite with no official confirmation.
Why Disney Keeps Making Them
Love them or hate them, the numbers don't lie. Disney's live-action remakes tap into two powerful forces:
- Nostalgia — Adults who grew up with the originals bring their own kids
- Proven IP — These stories are already beloved, reducing the risk of a flop
The strategy has produced five billion-dollar movies and counting. As long as audiences keep showing up, Disney will keep remaking their vault.
