Opening Match — June 11, 2026

The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world. Mexico hosted the opening match as a nod to the country's rich World Cup history (they hosted in 1970 and 1986).

This is when the global party officially begins. Expect a massive opening ceremony followed by the first match of the group stage.

Group Stage — June 11 to June 29, 2026

With 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four, the group stage is the longest phase of the tournament. Matches will be played across all 16 host cities simultaneously, meaning there's football happening pretty much around the clock for nearly three weeks.

Key facts:

  • 96 matches in the group stage alone
  • Top two teams from each group advance, plus the eight best third-place teams
  • Matches spread across all 16 venues in the US, Canada, and Mexico

Group Stage ends: June 29, 2026

Round of 32 — July 1–3, 2026

A new addition for 2026! With 48 teams and 32 advancing from the group stage, there's now a Round of 32 before the traditional knockout rounds. This means more sudden-death drama and more chances for upsets.

Dates: July 1–3, 2026

Round of 16 — July 5–7, 2026

The knockout rounds truly heat up here. Sixteen teams remain, and every match is do-or-die. This is historically where we see some of the most dramatic moments in World Cup history — penalty shootouts, last-minute goals, and heartbreaking eliminations.

Dates: July 5–7, 2026

Quarter-Finals — July 9–10, 2026

Eight teams left. The quarter-finals are where the real contenders separate themselves. These matches are played at the biggest venues in the tournament, and the atmosphere is absolutely electric.

Dates: July 9–10, 2026

Semi-Finals — July 14–15, 2026

Four teams. Two matches. The semi-finals are arguably the most tense matches of the entire tournament. Win and you're in the World Cup Final. Lose and you're playing for third place.

Dates: July 14–15, 2026

Third-Place Match — July 18, 2026

The consolation final. While it doesn't carry the same weight as the main event, third-place matches can be surprisingly entertaining — both teams play with less pressure and more freedom.

Date: July 18, 2026

The Final — July 19, 2026

MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.

This is it. The biggest single sporting event on the planet. Over 80,000 fans will pack MetLife Stadium (home of the NFL's Giants and Jets) to witness the crowning of the 2026 World Cup champion.

The eyes of the entire world will be on New Jersey. An estimated 1.5 billion people will watch the final live on television. Whether you're there in person or watching from home, this is the moment everything has been building toward.

Date: July 19, 2026
